Get/borrow a voltmeter. Measure the voltage on the battery when the engine is running, and when it isn't. It should be around 11.6, up to around 12.6 with the engine OFF. Running, you should see at least 13 volts.
Measure between the negative terminal of the battery and the chassis. The voltage difference should be less than 50 millivolts (0.05 volts). If not, you've got a problem with the ground strap from the battery to the chassis.
Also measure the voltage between the alternator case and chassis. Anything over 0.05 volts, and there is a grounding problem. The alternator case should be grounded to chassis. The alternator ground strap is an issue.
If the voltage on the battery does not increase when the engine is running, I would suspect the alternator.
HOWEVER - you didn't mention the battery light. When you turn the car to ON but not start it, do you see the BAT light? You should. When you start the car, it should go out. If you don't see the BAT light when ON/ not running, either the light is bad, or the thin wire from that light to the back of the alternator (usually yellow or gree) is bad. That bulb/wire is critical to getting the alternator to work properly.
