Draining gas tank help.

Has anyone drained the tank of an 88 before? There isn't a drain plug and the bentley manual says to hook a hose up to the pump and run the pump until the tank is dry. Where do I put the hose and will running the tank dry damage the pump at all? Also, even if the tank is empty, how much gas am I looking at having spilled on me when I take the accumulator off? Would it help to park the car on an incline when the level is low? Will this move the little amount of gas back to keep the fuel from spilling when I loosen the lines. Thanks for all the help. Really don't want to burn my car or me up.
