88 SPG Reverse....

What is the cause of "popping out of reverse"?
the story so far.....bought an 88 SPG with 252,000 KM ...with a bad reverse gear.... did the reverse gear lever fix (a la Townsend and twinsaabs).... and added some shims to the detente spring while I had the trans access plate off...
reverse now works much better with no gear noise....but it will still occasionaly pop out of reverse...gentle pressure on the stick keeps it there...
other symptoms include a 3rd gear that is sometimes hard to find... a jury rigged shift lever lockout rod (looks like a coat hanger)....all gears (except reverse) are in great condition and there is no pinion whine...picked up a used lever and shift rubber universal (the thing just ahead of the firewall) from the pick your part today...
I have searched through the list for "shift" and "detente" and went through a lot of the very good advice this morning....
So if "popping out of reverse" is a symptom...what is the cause?...a weak detente spring or worn grooves where the detente ball is supposed to engage.. or ??
thanks to all for the bandwidth...
