You are talking about 1994 and 1995 cars -- post those questions to the NG900 (NG=new generation) BB for better answers about those.
Classic 900 (1980's thru 1993) manual trans costs about the same at Erickson - $1600. At Andrews of Princeton, $1150, used trans $300 to $500.
However, swapping the tranny in a classic Saab 900 is no DIY unless you have experience and an engine lift. Generally, the engine and transmission are pulled as a unit and the transmission is replaced. Then the engine and trans are replaced as a unit.
For me, the parts and labor for my transmission rebuild (includes things to do while the engine is out: main seals, head gasket, alternator bushings, valve cover gasket, etc.) will be $2500.
Yes, it IS a lot to pay for a 16-year-old car, but it's mine!
