I've done Michigan to East Coast trip about 5 times in the last year to pick up cars. In addition to vsfoxe's items, I carried the following:
- couple quarts of motor oil (tranny seal went out on one and I made it back by fill up with these and that was the only incident I had.)
- coolants
- gallon of water
- 'Power on the go' rechargeable jump starter/air pump/light
- flashlights
- Extra full size tire if you have it(You can only go 55mph and about 100? or so miles on the spare. I was stuck in upstate NY somewhere on Sunday night a few years ago and I was SOL).
- generic heater hose and various size hose clamps. (If you are going to drive this car regularily, you'd probably keep these in the car anyways.)
- I have a portable GPS unit. There were some cars that Speedo was out more than 10 mph, or don't work at all. These are handy and fun to see your progress.
- Any and all tools you can fit in your tool box.
- Bently or even Haynes manual
