Too bad your friend didn't get the stick. 1.8t is good engine and can be tweaked with a tuner chip to increase boost for much improvement in torque and HP.
If your timing is even a couple of degrees retarded, e.g. 14 degrees before top dead center (btdc), you will lose 3-5 mpg. At spec of 16 btdc with a tuned up car, you should get about 25/26 in normal driving, and significantly more on highway.
Spark plugs should be gapped to 0.024" and NGK bcp7es or 7ev plugs are the right ones. OEM rotor and dist cap. Bougicord wires. All important.
Clean out throttle body and butterfly with carb spray and an old toothbrush.
Finally, a tired O2 sensor can reduce mileage as can a clogged catalytic converter. But try timing reset and simple stuff first.
Then throw in a bottle of Techron every 6-12 mos to clean injectors.
