Hi, Tom. I live in Maine, and also see quite a variety of weather. No garage space, either. I've got a red '90 SPG which is/was a California car (no rust at all, & fasteners underneath are still nice). It gets stored outside with a decent cover on it during winter. First snow - away it goes - mothballs for car/hatch/engine, bag up the exhaust, remove battery). In the spring I wait (impatiently) for at least 2 good rains to wash away any remaining salt on the roads before I clean it up from winter nap, and enjoy it all summer.
The cover I use is a Covercraft Technalon Tan C11826TK from VIP Discount Auto (a chain in the Northeast). I think it was about $135 (cheaper than on-line, no shipping, but add tax), and is the 3-layer breathable nice fabric. Not the best, I'm sure, but does a decent job. Used 2 winters, still seems fine.
I give it a nice coat or 2 of Liquid Glass, prior to storage. The original paint (even with a couple minor scratches/nicks) cannot be beat, in my opinion
Your model # would be different, due to the '86 bumpers.
Hope this helps, and good luck!
