One of my great joys is going to junkyards for treasure-hunting expeditions.
When the gas filler assembly on my '89 was so cracked that it was about ready to lose the metal cover door, I went in and picked a few filler assembies. (FWIW, I found that '83 and earlier filler assemblies hold up better than more recent ones - they changed the plastic compound in '84 or '85.) The filler caps have a drain hole that connects to a hose which exits the car through a hole in the body.
I went through quite a few post-'85 cars on which the small nipple that connects the drain hole to the hose had broken off the filler assembly.
You can access the inside of the filler assembly by peeling back the fabric on the right side of the trunk/hatch and removing the screws that fasten the plastic guard. Then you can see if there are any loose or broken fittings.
And, of course, if there cracks around the filler neck in the assembly, you'll get gas fumes that will enter the car if there is any leakage from the gas cap.
