Head gasket fix?

Well, at the risk of getting lambasted here, I ask the following question:
The head gasket in my 1990 900 Sedan (246,172 miles)/original engine, is failing.
Given the mileage, I can't justify investing $800 to 1200 for someone to repair it for me, and I'm somewhat reluctant to take on the job myself due to inexperience with this level of mechanical repair.
So, is it feasible to use K&W Block seal by CRC? It's advertised for use with blocks, cylinder heads, head gaskets and radiators. The directions call for running the engine up to operating temperature, draining the coolant completely, adding this stuff with about 3 quarts of water and then adding any additional water to fill the cooling system, running the engine up to temperature again, waiting several minutes, then draining the cooling system again... and waiting for 24 hours...then flush and fill with coolant.
Or is this just another one of those radiator/cooling system fixes that buy you a few weeks, clog the cooling system and cause more of a problem?
Opinions? Any body ever used this stuff with success?
Thanks,
Todd inMA
