Hood release cable attachment

How does the hood release cable attach to the handle inside the car? The mechanism became tight and I did not oil it in time--the extra force resulted in it dislodging from the handle. The end now looks like a hook but does not stay in the hole when pulled. How is it supposed to fasten? Can it be soldered? I can use pliers, but... and I really don't want to install a new cable.
