The 8 valve book came out well after the 8 valve cars were no longer made, so the book is as up to date as they come. The 8 valve book will come with a lot of 8V specific information that you won't find in the 16v book. Yes, suspension and stuff is similar, but the lack of engine information is not good.
The Bentley manual is not cheap, and I know I puckered the first time I bought one for $50, brought up on Haynes manuals for $15. But the savings in time and effort (and mistakes avoided) has paid for it many, many times over. Never skimp on tools, and the Haynes manual is the best tool you'll ever get for the car.
When I bought my VW four years back, I paid over $80 for the Bentley for that, and given the good experience the Saab one has provided, didn't blink. The cost of doing business.
