I had a dead, no-spark problem several years back. This was my own fault, as I pinched the wire (from the Hall-sensor) under the alternator bracket. Grounded, that signal never got anywhere, so it was just like you said.
That wire goes alongside the block, over to the neighborhood of the throttle body, where it plugs into the harness. You might want to check along that wire for problems. Like anyplace where the insulation is worn off. All I had to do for mine was wrap tape around it to replace the insulation that I had cut.
