as the source of the problem? my 82 900 developed an intermittent short in the fuel pump cut-off switch circuit at the junction of the multi-pin plug which joins the interior of the cabin with the exterior just beneath the fuse/relay box. After weeks of frustration I discovered it completely by accident one day when my left knee hit against that spot while the car idled. Sure enough with repeated bumps against that spot the car would sputter, and I could even get it to die. Because it was too difficult to fix just one wire in that group (no way to tell if it was the male of female side of the plug) I just bypassed that circuit. No problem since.
