You don't really need the tools when you're pulling from a junkyard car. Before you do anything else, remove the lower shock absorbe nut and pry the shock absorber off. That will drop the lower control arm and take the tension off it so you can pull out the ball joints like John described. So you don't have to mess with the outer tie rod end, you can just unscrew it from the inner tie rod.
When you're installing it, you can use a number of different things for spacers: 1" oak blocks, old ball joints, 1-1/8" nuts from the hardware store, old brake pads, etc.
I found one easy way to remove the ball joints with the swivel member off the car. Remove the nut, support the end of the member on a vise or something similar, and give the threaded end of the balljoint a good whack along the axis of the bolt with a 5-lb hammer. If you deform the threads on a good one you want to reuse, you can clean up the deformed end with a grinder of a file. That way, you don't have to deal with a pickle fork and mess up the rubber boot.
Same thing goes for the inner tie rod end.
