I was given an 85 4-door 8 valve but was not given any clues as to what problems it might have. I thought I would strip what little I could from it and dispose of it. In examining the engine bay I noticed the tri-pod and axle hanging in the air completely out of the inner driver. The battery was dead so I jumped and and it came to life. The inner driver was turning so I assumed the tranny might be functional. I tore out the axle and replaced it with another that I had. I don't have a plate for the car but it drives up and down the driveway just fine. My question is: Has anyone ever heard of an axle coming out on it's own? The remainder of the rubber boot and clamp were still on the inner driver. All of the hardware seemed tight so I don't think someone took it apart and put it back together that way. Incidentally one of the tripod roller bearings was missing from the tripod. I didn't see anything broken. I am just wondering if I cured the problem or the result of a different problem.
Thanks for any insight anyone might provide.
