80/100 H4 bulbs shattered/blown. Why?

I recently put a set of e-codes on my car. The lights were relayed to allow me to safely run higher wattage bulbs(i.e more than 55/65). I put 80/100 Hella H4 bulbs in and they worked fine. I just drove the car from mass. to Atlanta straight through and the lights worked fine. The next day when i turned the lights on to adjust them a litle bit and one bulb shattered and the low beam on the other one blew and the entire bulb turned milky white. Anyone know what would cause this? Defective bulbs? too much heat? I was suprised that this happened because some people run 100/130s. Any help would be appreciated.
