You can get rebuilts in the $140 range (not including core)
It's a pretty unfriendly environment for a piece of electronics. What happens isn't so much that the wire breaks and the sensor goes to hail all at once. It's more along the lines of heat degrading the electronics and moisture getting in through the seals, causing it to deliver a signal that's either not linear with flow or deliver a signal that's not within the range that the ECU expects to see.
On one of their pages, Townsend Imports mentioned that the output signal difference between a good sensor and a bad sensor at full flow may only be a volt or so.
The most obvious symptom of a bad AMM is poor running in the first few minutes after a cold start - during that period, the ECU is running the engine without the feedback of the O2 sensor, so it needs a good signal from the AMM during that period.
It could possibily cause it to run rich - but it would have to be sooooo bad that the O2 sensor coudn't compensate.
Look at the other things we mentioned before you delve into spending $$ on an AMM.
And, there are always people here willing to help narrow the diagnosis as you try the different possibilities, so feel free to post what you've found.
