I assume that the 12.6 volt measurement is when the engine is running. That is a bit low.
When you turn the key to ON, but don't start the car, do you get a BAT light? Does it go out when the engine starts?
The alternator needs the BAT light circuit to work. That's the thin wire running to the back of the alternator. When you turn the key to ON, current runs thru the dash bulb, through the thin wire, and into the alternator. This current is necessary to energize the field coils of the alternator. The bulb should light. If it doesn't when you turn the key to ON, make sure that wire is there and properly tied to the proper lug on the alternator. If that wire is tied to the wrong lug, like just a ground lug, the light will be on all the time, but it won't be getting current to the proper place in the alternator. And if that wire is tied to the right place on the alternator, but shorted to ground, you'll get the bulb on, but again, no current to where it's necessary on the alternator.
So - what does the BAT light do with the key ON but engine not running, and with the engine running?
