Actually, the way that the convertibles are made is the culprit here.
Saab makes a 2-door (remember those appearing in 1986?) and they ship it to another plant that cuts the top off (really) and converts it into a convertible. Most major European makes and many US-made convertibles are made this way (AMG has made many BMW convertibles, etc.)
So... that's why those 2-doors were a 1986-only kinda thing -- the convertibles started appearing the next year (1987), but they were actually 1986 two-doors that were made into convertibles in time for the 1987 model year (of course they get a 1987 VIN). The same thing happened in 1994 -- the 1993 two-doors were converted into convertibles for the 1994 model year.
Additionally, the convertible converting plant has to work through the design and manufacturing on a new model, usually meaning that they will not have a convertible to sell for the first several months (year?) of a particular model run. Again, in 1994, the NG 900 convertible was not 'finished', so Saab kept selling the C900 convert for that overlapping year.
The other factors mentioned may be true, but the process is the one to blame.
More information than you probably needed....
