I would try a separate ground wire to the radio cage and plug grnd wire(forget which wire, but usually black). Also run a separate ground wire from the antenna mount to the ground point under the rear hatch latch.
If reception improves when you push on the antenna, the contact ears on the chrome sleeve may not be making good contact with the antenna base sleeve. The resistance between the tip of the antenna and the center of the plug should be less than 30 ohms. If resistance is close to 30, pull the antenna apart and clean the inside surface on the antenna base sleeve(where the mast rides) with sandpaper and finish with a shot of contact cleaner. Then reassemble making sure that you bend the ears on the chrome sleeve to make solid contact with the sleeve surface that you just cleaned. I did this last week and significantly improved AM reception.
there is also a chance that you need to replace the antenna coax. You can check the resistance between the center conductor and ground shielding (should be very high). Resistance betweeen each end of the center conductor should be very low.
