The shim is most likely the one between reverse gear and pinion bearing nut, adjusting the stack height.
They wear out after awhile.
A complete tear down is needed to replace them.
Since it is an major untertaking to replace it I guess in your case you could just keep driving the car until you feel its time to rebuild the transmission because of other reasons, like worn out pinion bearings.
