The car I installed it in is an '83 3-door turbo. The factory rear speaker position is just to the outside of the removable horizontal rear deck behind the headrests. Although the prior owner of this vehicle (I just bought it two weeks ago) had better speakers installed inside the rear wall panels and he removed the original speakers. In this car's case all the wiring was labeled by him at the radio location in the dash so it made it easier to install. Although he had the radio powered from the instrument light circuit (a bad idea for lots of reasons) so I ran a clean, new fused power feed directly from the battery.
In my other 900, which is an '87 turbo convertible, the prior owner had everything screwed up with the prior radio installation and so I used a volt-ohm meter in 'continuity check' mode to trace every single wire for speakers and power. You don't need an expensive meter to do this, though, I just happen to own one because I do alot of electrical / electronics work. A simple circuit tester will do.
If you can let everyone know the year and model of your car maybe we can give you more specific help. Or, if you say you have an amplifier can you trace the wiring at the speakers and see if it corresponds to wiring colors you find at the amplifier? That would be a good place to start. Does your new radio have RCA type pre-outs to connect to your amplifier and if not, how did you connect to it? Depending on the type of radio you installed some connect in different ways to amplifiers. Also your amplifier may only be capable of one type of input (line level RCA or speaker circuit for example).
Keep in mind that if this is not a factory installation you are dealing with then all bets are off...lots of people do strange things with radio installations in cars and not everyone knows what they are doing (like my '87's prior owner).
