You've got low-level signal going to the rear speaker amp through the stereo harness. Wiring the rear speaker output leads from your deck (assuming you can find/make a connector) to the existing low-level leads won't work.
Your options seem to be: 1) run speaker wires from the deck to the rear speakers, which is pretty easy, or 2) adapt/splice pre-out leads to existing harness and retain OEM rear amp. #2 will be an extreme PITA, and not worth it, as the OEM amp is poor quality at best, IMO. Have you ever taken out the dash fascia, console, knee bolster, etc...? It's not that difficult the second, third, fourth...time.
I have a '94 conv. and have pondered the stereo thing too. Rear speaker upgrade helps a lot. I went so far as to get a donor amp to get the plugs, thinking I could wire a better amp in while retaining the existing wiring harness, using the donor plug. Problem is to get a enough power back there, as the factory power lead is too small to run a decent amp. My car has never had the dash/console/knee bolster apart, and I'm reluctant to dig into this. So that project is on hold (my daily driver SPG is another story, too long to tell here, but it's getting a big system). Plus, the wiring is very difficult to access under the extra crossmember. My advice, forget the OEM amp and run speaker wires back there.
Good luck, and keep us posted.
