There are 3 bolts holding the thing. But you've got to remove the console and a trim piece below the steering wheel to get to the point of removal. The trim pice is easy. There's either two screws and a plastic clip or just the two screws, depending on what year your car is. Take it off.
Pull out the rubber filler between the console and the shifter console. Take out the ashtray. There's a 10mm bolt up there (pictured in the link RS posted). That 10mm bolt screws into a larger bolt that holds the center of the knee bolster. Take it out. (Hint: to get the console out w/o breaking the tabs, unbolt the shifter console to give a little more room. Do it). If you've got an EQ in the lower DIN, take it out and pull the cage, and unhook the cable from the back of the cage. Now try and wiggle the console out. If it won't come out, take out the 4 screws holding the plastic to the carpet-covered part of the console. Hopefully that will let you get the console out. You're down to 2 10mm bolts, and this is where lots of people seem to have problems. The bolts are at either end of the knee bolster and screw in from the back. The back is in the engine compartment, by the door jams. The linked pictures show the position of the bolts, but usually there are wires clipped near there which block your view, and the bolt heads might have a blob of monkey shit hiding them. I use a 1/4 inch drive socket and a long extension to take out the bolts. If you wiggle that sucker and pull down it should come out. I don't think I forgot anything...
Note there is a clip on each side of the dash that fits in a slot on the knee bolster. When you put it all back you want to be sure those clips engage the slots. If not the thing will rattle. It's much easier the second time.
Have fun.
