Kreen vs Auto-Rx vs ????

I've read some posts here about "engine cleaners". I worked as a mechanic's apprentice for several years while in HS and college, wanted to be one but Dad had other aspirations for me. I never bought the marketing claims for the oil additives(like Slick 50 & the like) and I always discouraged customers from using "cleaners", with the exception of Marvel(which seemed to work sometimes for stuck valves).
I have a buddy who swears using Kreen(kanolabs.com) applied directly into the cylinders of his trucks cleans deposits off the valves, pistons, & rings, makes them run better blah blah. I've never heard of it or used it(I do use their Kroil product though). I've seen posts here that Auto-Rx works miracles on dirty old engines and trannies. But, another buddy of mine used this in his '96 'Burb recently and clogged up his oil pickup, broke the pump, $965 repair(he neglected to ask me first).
It would seem that using a cleaner in a motor to loosen up gunk, the gunk is going to circulate throughout the motor and either get stuck somewhere or clog something up, causing major headaches.
What do you think?
