1) never tried from below. 2) never removed an elbow to remove the 5 or so I have done 3) Used a 7/8 box end wrench and a 22mm box end wrench and a love tap from a hammer to 'break it' then it turns easy - this is when piping hot right after a run and battery removal.
No, I am not crazy. I just did this last week on my '91.
When soldering, it may be helpful to use a little flux to get the solder to wich nicely onto the wires. Heat shrink works a bit better than electrical tape but requires a little advance planning and care to keep the heat away from it. May I suggest staggering the wire cuts so that they do not end up in a big bundle.
