The circuitry is pretty straightforward. Power comes from the ignition switch when in the ON position, to the bulb. From the bulb it goes straight to the alternator. There are two wires on the alternator - a fat red one (battery/starter) and a thin one usually yellow or green. That's the wire to the bulb. No other circuitry.
First, check that wire at the alternator. It's not uncommon for the wire to wear and corrode. If you disconnect the wire from the alternator and tie it to ground, and turn the car to ON (don't start it), the dash light should come on and stay on. If it does not, then the problem is the wire to the bulb or the bulb socket. If the bulb comes on and stays on, and wiggling doesn't seem to matter much, then the problem is either a worn voltage regulator (the diamond-shaped device on the back of the alternator) or a bad alternator ground. Voltage regulators wear out over time, especially the brushes, and replacing them is no big deal.
You could move the bulb to a different socket, but it's critical that the bulb get the proper switch 12 volts (knows as 54 on most schematics).
My guess is that you've got a bad wire to the alternator. Next, it may be a bad contact in the dash. I'd try and clean the contacts before I started moving things around.
