Re: Cheap spring compressors Posted by rob [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Cheap spring compressors, Ari ![]() |
I have compressed the springs on my car by taking the front wheel off, and jacking up that side of the suspension with my floor jack, compressing the springs. Then I wrap copper wire (14 gauge I think) over the top and bottom rung up of the spring as many times as I can, and tie it off. It sounds ghetto and weak, but it actually works quite well. Then I let the jack down and the spring more or less drops out. (have a harbor freight compressor but it doesnt fit well).
One time I was curious to see how powerful the spring was, so I took a long, heavy lead plumbing pipe that was in the garage and placed it through a compressed coil spring. Then I laid it in the driveway and cut the ghetto-wire-compressor holding it tight with a grinder. The spring let loose with an incredible amount of force, but the pipe kept it laying on the ground. You really would have to see to believe the amount of energy let loose when it sprang apart. Could easily kill/maim.
