My automatic transmission newest tantrum! longish

I posted a couple months ago about my automatic transmission not shifting out of low. I cleaned the pan, changed the fluid, adjusted the bands, (shade tree calibration), and Walaah, a crisp shifting transmission. My wife and I took it for a ride today, about a thousand miles later, and it made a screeching sound, kind of jerked like hitting the brakes hard, then it died. Lots of drama, squealed to a stopped on a blind hill from both directions. It seemed to be locked between forward and reverse. Couldn't find a neutral, a farmer tried to pull it off the road but it wouldn't roll or drag. I'm suprised it didn't tear the power train out of the car. After shifting between first and reverse several times, at least 40 times, (wife upset about the possibility of no fall top down excursions and getting creamed and me trying to call a tow truck out pronto) it decided to move. Made it home with the transmission trying to go into reverse several times, but it didn't fully engage. The shift lever doesn't move by itself and it feels like the gear selector was operating correctly. I'll do the 5 spd conversion if its more than a simple solution.
