New cat and exhaust problems

Just had my indie replace the exhaust from header back. After I got the car, it smelled like the exhaust was running real hot. The tail pipe was even hot (not scorching but HOT) to the touch.
Is this normal for a new exhaust and cat to be "broken" in. New O2 sensor was checked and running as specified.
TIA,
S
