EZK timing problem driving me nuts!

I have an '86 16V with EZK (distributor-mounted Hall sensor). The base timing is changing by itself from time to time by either advancing or retarding 4-5*.
I swapped out the EZK box, but it didn't help. When I did the swap, the timing changed by itself--I had to re-set it 4-5*. However, with the replacement EZK now in for a week+, the base timing has changed by itself again.
I swapped out the distributor with one from a turbo car (I have a turbo on the engine now). I defeated the advance in the vac capsule but allow mechanical retard on boost. Base timing still changes with this replacement distributor.
While the replacement turbo distributor can change timing mechanically, the original, stock distributor does this soley via EZK. Is it possible that the Hall sensor guts are faulty or somehow are able to shift? Is it common for old distributors to become "sloppy" with age? The shutter wheel is attached to the distributor *extremely* securely; there's no way it could move.
The timing chain and chain guides are new, the tensioner recently thoroughly cleaned, the cam gears are used but were deemed good by a Saab tech. Rotor & cap are pretty new (few thousand miles only).
Thanks for any insight/shared experience!
