I was at Chesterfield Auto Parts, a local Pick your part junkyard here in town pulling some odds and ends for both my van and my SAAB. In the yard was what appeared to be a 900TC in even better shape than my own! The paint was still shiney, and no apparent body damage. Of course, the car had been picked over, with numerous parts removed. I, of course, had to remove some of my own for spares, since the car was in such good condition. I pulled the turbocharger, and the convertible top, as well as the little headlight wipers, and a set of fog lamps.

I saw one of those number things that hang from the mirror laying in the floor of the car. Chesterfield Auto parts gets it's vehicles from Kidney foundation donations. My thought was that this car had some sort of big ticket mechanical failure, so the owner just gave it to the kidney foundation after a big estimate, instead of selling it in non-working condition, or having it repaired.

BTW, question. I can spin the impeller of the turbocharger by hand. The impeller does not have any end play to it at all, and feels very smooth, It does however have more resistance to it than say, a bicycle wheel bearing, or an electric fan blade. If I reach in and flick it with my finger, it won't stay spinning but about a second or so. Is this turbo bad? For $20 I figure I can take my chances on it, and if it is bad, it will be a nice little education project on rebuilding one!
