p/s pump fluid

Just replaced the P/S pump the other day on the 900t. Brand new OEM Scanwest, as far as I can tell. Cleaned and painted all brackets, pulley, etc. Installed the pulley with my trusty dual purpose ball bearing puller/presser. It pays to have the right tool for little investment. Job was a cinch without even a vice to work with. Once the upper mount bracket was out and engine jacked up an inch or two, access was granted.
Now, I have been using Valvoline synthetic fluid for quite some time now, assuming that it may contain conditioning agents which could help the steering rack seals/rubber. Since I just purchased a new pump at a $205 investment (eEuroparts) I am curious what other people think is the right lube? Is this system like Saab AT's where ignorant people use Mercon Dexron even though type F is required? Or are we free to explore?
