When you say "crank" do you really mean "fire" or did the engine literally not spin for 2 hours?

You could have a burned out starter solenoid or a bad ground connection on the starter. Resistance is directly related to temperature. A "bad" starter may behave "ok" when cold, but severely degrade as temps go up. Your cranking problems may be independent from your motoring problems. Too much spark advance also creates hard starts, but you say you already checked that.

Motoring wise, you may have a bad EGR valve, creating a very large vacuum leak, explaining the high idle. I believe the NA 900's used EGR during those years, unlike the turbo's. This is not uncommon at least on other applications. I'd check vacuum at idle once you get the car to run. If the vacuum in the manifold is 5psi or less, you may have found the problem. A bad PCV check valve is not enough of a leak to cause a no-start condition.
