I don't think your 86 900S had what is sometimes called a "sway bar" or "anti-sway bar," so I think you're talking about a "trailing arm" or "link," which is the approximately 1-foot long, black (well, probably rusty in your car), slender tube that runs parallel to the wheel, attaching at the axle behind the brake and at the car body, next to the gas tank. There is a round rubber bushing at each end. If this is what you are talking about, then I would not drive the car.
Trailing arms keep the axle properly positioned fore & aft, especially during cornering and braking. Without one of them, not only is the axle not held properly, but you may also be stressing other suspension components, e.g., the panhard bar (the long bar above the axle, running parallel to it), which positions the axle laterally with respect to the car. The panhard bar also transfers a lot of force from the car to the axle during cornering.
In an emergency situation, you might find the car uncontrollable because the rear axle is shifting.
