From the harmonic balancer end, you turn it clockwise. From the (Rufus J) flywheel end, you turn it counter-clockwise (unless you're in Britain, Canada, India, or Australia, where you turn it anti-clockwise.)
Your best bet for finding where the timing marks are supposed to be is to turn the crank so that the rotor is pointing to the right (as viewed from the front of the engine (see Bentley page 340-5). Then you should just be able to make out the engraved lines and numbers. Use steel wool or sandpaper to clean it off and mark the timing points (0 and 16 deg BTDC) with white paint and you've got it.
