I fixed my check valves by following directions I found on this BB. Do a search and you might be able to find them.
Basically you disassemble the valve (it snaps apart) stretch a piece of plastic grocery bag over the hole - replacing the shot rubber diaphram - and snap it back together.
I's really not any more difficult that that. The valves only let water pass one way, so the fluid doesn't drain back into the bottle. Clever... when it works. When it doesn't, you have to pump awhile to refill the pipeline. And then all you do is manage to get the valve cover wet.
