Early Garrett turbo equipped 900's were oil only. So I suppose you could say they were "oil cooled". Owners manual advised that you should run the car for about a minute to cool them down and avoid coking the oil from heat soak (BTW, still not a bad idea after a hard drive...).
Later Garretts, and all Mitsu's, were also equipped with watercooling as well. Not sure what year they were introduced -- '87 perhaps? Earlier? Anyway, a watercooled turbo is definately the way to go if you want a more reliable turbo...
