What other equipment are you using?
I'm not a fan of 4 inch speakers. Too small to give good sound, IMO. I don't think it's worth it to do a door mount if you plan to stick with 4 inchers. I would keep dash location and use separate tweet in the speaker grill. Better speakers will give better sound, but 4 inch is just not enough for real hi-fi.
Also depends on what equip you're planning to use. I like separate amps, as no head unit is going to match a decent amp. Of course that means running speaker wires, power and RCA cords.
I put 5 1/4 separates in the doors of my RIP '84. Driver behind door pull, tweet in front of door pull. Not ideal, but it worked. Left the dash speakers in for fill. With speakers in dash, doors & rear the sound came from all around. Sub in trunk, too. Main amps mounted in trunk well.
