Strange Occasional Hesitation/Surge...

I was driving my wife's 1986 900s (AT) on a highway with a medium incline yesterday at 45-50mph. I pressed the accelerator a bit to give the car a bit more juice and it didn't respond well. It was a strange hesitaion/surge/hesition that lasted a few seconds. I goosed the gas and the car down shifted (it usually does this when climbing steeper hills), pushing up the rpm's up a little above 4k and then it upshifted and went completely normal. The car was fully warmed up. On the next incline I tried to replicate the conditions (speed, slight incline etc) but the car performed normally. This has happened once before, about three months ago. I asked my wife if she has noticed this before and she said no (she knows the car well and is quick to tell me if something is amiss). Any ideas where to begin? If this is the beginning of a problem, I would like to nip it in the bud... The troubleshooters in my manuals don't seem to address this specific of a problem.
Thanks in advance.
