Since I do flywheels "in house" I opt to machine them IF the customer wants to pay for it.
It is another $30.00 charge on top of the standard clutch job and some people that call around to get the lowest price might not want to pay that.
I don't know how the conversation between you and the shop went to begin with since each shop/customer relation is different.
I might scare some customers away since I try to give them the worst case scenario in cost so that it is no surprises when they pick up the car, or that I don't have to call them back when everything is apart saying, Well, now you need this and that on top of what was agreed to.
That is a standard practice by many shops, to lure you in with a really low price, take the car apart and then call back to sell more even though they knew beforehand that more things were most likely needed.
To replace the whole clutch assembly on a 87 900T (I assume that is what you have by reading old posts) would be $700.00 parts, labor, tax using OEM parts.
This would include whole clutch assembly, slave cylinder, pilot bearing, clutch shaft seal, clutch cover seal, brake fluid, loc tite, engine degreaser, brake cleaner and machine flywheel.
It does not include rear main seal, that would be another $45.00.
The rear main seal on your year/model is almost bullet proof and very rarely does it need to be replaced.
On newer Saabs though (94 and up) they go bad all the time.
