First, I don't know what's different in Australia, & you call it a GLE, so ????
What I know about is 16-valve with LH 2.4 injection system & EZK ignition.
The book published by Bentley is better than Haynes. Amazon.com (see link below) or ??? I don't know where to get it in Au.

Try this...
Crank the starter for a good several seconds. Then release the key to 'run', DON'T turn it all the way off. Now connect your jumper to check the fault codes. It should not have 12231, if the ECU got the tach signal while cranking.

If the ECU does NOT give 12231 this time, then maybe it's got the popular '89 ECU failure. The ECU output for the fuel pump is fried. Try jumpering the fuse or relay to run the fuel pump. Then see if the engine starts this way. If so, then either get a new ECU or think about a permanent wiring fix to run the pump.

A popular check is whether the tachometer jumps while cranking. But the EZK ignition gives the signal to the tachometer & to the ECU over 2 different wires. Maybe the blue/red wire from pin 8 of EZK going to pin 25 of ECU is broken??
