I don't know about the fit issues -- I have heard that some dashes require minor "massaging" to get proper fit.
Having said that, I don't think the job is too difficult, but it is a mild PITA.
I recommend taping labels for all the wires you remove from the various switches/controls, or at least taking notes as to position, etc.
A staple gun comes in handy for the side vents that supply air to the windows (Saab stapled the hoses to the vents). I think what I did was remove the vent hose completely on the driver's side, leaving it attached to the dash (can't really remove the vent piece on that side) and removed the vent from the dash on the passenger side, leaving the hose in place.
Be careful with the light in the glove box -- it ain't real strong.
Have a flashlight on hand.
Be gentle with the four long screws that hold the faschia on. They aren't fragile, but the tubes through which the bolts pass are barely attached to the fascia as it is. Use any force and you'll crack the tabs that hold the tubes in place.
You may find it a little easier to completely remove the stereo's DIN box from the dash -- you'll gain some more room to work with wiring.
Now is an excellent time to replace any bad gauges, e.g., if your clock is dead or your temp gauge is jumpy...
