Yes Sir you are right. It is timed to about ten min. But there is no clock like timer. When you push the button it sends current to a capacitor (cap) charging it. When you let go of the button the cap starts to discharge. The power from the cap holds the heater relay closed. When the power level in the cap drops below a set value the relay opens cutting power to the heaters. This takes about 10 min. You can set the time it takes by the size or number of caps used. I know this is how it is in other cars and my understanding is Saab is the same. It is a cool way to make a cheap timer.
Oh one more thing. If you take a high value cap (but not too high) and charge it up with say a 9V battery you have made a cool toy for parties. After it is charge toss it to a friend (then run like hell). They will get one hell of a shock. This almost got me kicked out of high school. If you want I can tell you how to make a cap out of a plastic bucket with a metal handle and dry lawn (below say 20% hum). This is fun at cookouts.
Not sure how much help this science lesion was but I still think your switch is fine. Good Luck…
Oh, no I don’t get to sit in the front seats of the conies. But I do get to be on the Flight Deck and in the Flight Engineers seat (one the ground for engine/system test) for time to time.
