sludge coming out of distributor?

Hi,
I had the weird morning no-start ( but would start in the afternoon). [87 900 turbo conv]. I replaced the plugs, but that didn't do much good for that problem. I went to replace the distributor cap, and the old one had some kind of sludge on the lower part, and on the inside too.
On the inside the dust cover had come off and it seems the stuff was coming from inside the distributor. Think it's ruined? I put the new cap on and it started.
I checked the resistance of the spark plug wires, came out lower than what was supposed to be. Thought that was strange.
Any ideas? Thanks!
