Dumb radio antenna question

Warning massive ingnorance follows.

I'm about to order a replacement radio for my '86 900S.
The symptom is quite simple: no sound.
All other functions apparently work, IE, I can use the up/down frequency scan, the preset, etc; the volume controls work int that the led bar display increments with the +/- controls for each function (volume/bass/treble/fade). The cassette inserts/rejects/REWs/FFs correctly, etc. It also turn on/off.
The only thing missing is the sound, plus the antenna doesn't extend/retract (I left it extended).
I HAVE sent it back to Clarion once, for the Out-of-Warranty service, but don't want to spend the $95 when Crutchfield has a NEW replacement for $79.95.
Now, before getting the new one, I had a couple of thoughts/questions.
I've learned (and found it) that there is an amp buried in the console under the receiver (news to me after 18 years ;-) )
Considering that everything but the sound and the antenna work, could it be the amp?
If it's the amp, why doesn't the antenna work?
I'd like to confirm (or at least have greater confidence) that it's the receiver, and not the amp, before buying the new one.
