You can tap on the solenoid (don't tap on the starter itself...field magnets can come loose!!) and see if it helps.
Or you can directly (and carefully!) hook a starter cable up to the thick busbar at the back of the solenoid that goes directly into the starter motor (effectively bypassing the solenoid) and make the final connection at the ground...if it starts the solenoid is bad. Most of the time it's a solenoid issue.
But I've found that if I have to pull a starter I just put in a new starter...NEW ones are available kind of by default if a rebuilt core isn't available...I got a new Bosch starter last year for the price of a rebuilt. The new ones don't have the threaded studs for mounting the back bracket that goes to the block...Saab says it isn't necessary and Bosch makes this point on the box. Nevetheless, I removed the studs from my OEM Saab starter and changed them out on the new starter so I could mount the rear bracket. YMMV...good luck.
