I have chased AM static and finally have it controlled.

Run a separate ground from the battery to the radio cage ground wire and on to the antenna base with a jumper to the shield/outer plug conductor of the coax to antenna plug. This stops ground loops and avoids switch noise that you get if you use the rear central ground point(or just the body) for the antenna mount.

Then, run the antenna shaft out and make sure the contact tangs on the crome collar are bent out and that they contact a clean surface on the inside of the outer antenna cylinder.

Make sure you have a good condensor from the coil to ground(it doesn't have to be grounded at distirbutor side. I added another condensor from the alternator power side to ground to stop alternator whine. As others have said clean all the main ground points, but the separate ground wires solve 90% of the problem. The only thing left (which I haven't done) is to put a choke in the positive power supply to the radio. Radio Shack sells these.

There are variations in AM reception from radio to radio. Compare the specs of yours to others in a Crutchfield catalog. Maybe you want to buy a better head unit?
