Header pipe flange fix - wish me luck!

The header pipe one my don't-spend-another-cent-on-it 270K '89 broke yesterday - the very end where the flange is that mates with the donut gasket twisted off while I was trying to undo the cat flange.
I really didn't want to buy a new one. The header pipe costs $70-120, and they always seem to fail in the same place, rusting through at the very end right at the bellmouth, where the floating flange tends to hold the moisture and salt. The rest of the pipe always seems to be fine.
Anyhow, I took a look around the auto parts store, and found a $2.60 2" OD to 2 1/2" OD adaptor, and noticed that the transition between the minor and major diameters was almost identical to the bell mouth on the header pipe, and the 2" fits just about perfectly (with a slight interference fit) over the metric header pipe. Sawed off the 2 1/2" portion of the adaptor just above the flare, slid it over the header pipe stub, and clamped it on with a muffler clamp, then bolted the cat back on as usual.
the adaptor is a bit thinner than a new Saab pipe, so I don't expect it to last as long, but it should outlast the car, and is easy to replace should it not.
