am doing the same conversion - permanently.. Posted by Saabu [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Questions on swapping '87 SPG drivetrain into '90 900S, Fimum Fit, Thu, 14 Oct 2004 05:17:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
and i think its worth it , but to do it temporarily is too much work. it would be less stressful to buy a temp driver or rent a car (or take the bus). I am converting my 86 NA notchback into an 86 Turbo using an 86 SPG engine and wiring harness.
you are right, exhaust from manifold to tail is different so would have to be yanked and exchanged. that means cutting somewhere unless you undo the axle on the drivers side and swap them thru the gap.
turbo cars also have an extra exhaust shield above the muffler. Easy swap.
Assuming you swap the exhaust systems, your turbo APC system wont work without the turbo dash and wiring harness in the front left fender and the one in front of the engine block (low) and in swapping them you also have to swap the harness running across the firewall, thru all the PS pump hoses (PITA!). And there's a vacuum relay on the SPG's that werent on the NA cars (in front of the PS reservoir).
bonus - you do not have to swap the harness from ECU to injectors - they are identical except if one car has AC and the other doesnt. i found out the hard way, but i put red polyloom on it so it was easier to do it out of the car anyway.
another bonus - the NA cars are drilled to accept the oil cooler and intercooler.
SO, why dont you do the switch permanently? the dashes swap right out, the harnesses are not impossible by any stretch, and you'd have a turbo engine in a good body! it would be a good opportunity to slap in a FMIC (unless you've got AC iwc its a bit harder) and do a battery relocation.
other than that, i think there may be a difference in headlight wiring. Justin and others have discussed this earlier. click on my name and look at my historical posts and you'll find me broaching the same question awhile back.
